Romantic Suspense Author Genie Davis Speaks on 'Sex Versus Violence in the Crime Novel'

Palm Springs, CA (PRWEB) April 20, 2006

Romantic suspense author and screenwriter Genie Davis is taking on the topic "Sex Versus Violence in the Crime Novel" at the Palm Springs Book Fair, Saturday April 22nd.

Her new novel The Model Man is a wildly entertaining story about LA psychic con-artist Christy Harris, who meets her match in homicide detective Joe Richter.

Booklist says Davis' romantic suspense THE MODEL MAN is truly a find. The protagonists are interesting; their love affair is convincing; Christy's best friend, Louie, is a delight; and the well-crafted mystery is as entertaining as one of Stephen J. Cannell's television shows.

Writing as Nikki Alton, in July 2006 you'll see the publication of the erotic romance Rodeo Man, part of Kensington/Aphrodesia's sizzling The Cowboy collection.

More romantic suspense is coming in January 2007, with Five O'Clock Shadow also from Kensington/Zebra, and Genie's noir Dreamtown, published by a small press in 2001, is still guaranteed to have readers getting out their handkerchiefs.

As an Amazon Shorts author, her noir short story The Girl and the Gun is sold exclusively on Amazon as part of a new program on the web giant's site.

A produced screen and television writer, Genie's work spans a variety of genres from supernatural thriller to romantic drama, action, family, teen, and comedy.

She's written on staff for ABC-TV's Port Charles; written, produced, and directed reality programming and documentaries for The Learning Channel, PBS, and HGTV, as well as numerous television commercials and corporate videos, the independent film, Losing Hope, and projects for Wes Craven Films, Smith Hemion Productions, and Wild at Heart.

Fanboys Screenwriter Ernest Cline Kicks off Ready Player One novel at Comic-Con International with Speculative Fiction Panel and Joust Arcade Game Competition

New York, NY (PRWEB) June 23, 2011

Ernest Cline, screenwriter of the cult favorite movie, Fanboys, comes to Comic-Con International (http://www.comic-con.org) this July to introduce fans to his new novel, Ready Player One (Crown Books, on-sale: August 16th). Warner Brothers has already snapped up film rights to the novel after a heated bidding war (http://bit.ly/aFMGDb) and pre-publication buzz is growing as critics like Mark Frauenfelder from Boing Boing hail Ready Player One as ?my mind-blowing science fiction novel for the 2010s." (http://bit.ly/lg1QgU)

Set in a near-future world, Ready Player One centers on outcast Wade Watts, who escapes from his bleak surroundings by logging into a globally networked virtual utopia known as the OASIS. When the eccentric billionaire who created the OASIS dies, he offers up his vast fortune as the prize in an elaborate treasure hunt. Along with gamers from around the world, Wade joins the adventure, and quickly finds himself pitted against ruthless competitors who will do anything, in the OASIS or the real world, to reach the treasure first. It?s the ultimate wish fulfillment story, and paints a picture of our world changed drastically by the future of social networking years after Facebook (http://on.fb.me/iqG9bG).

Ready Player One is at once a remarkable sci-fi thriller and a brilliantly strange love letter to pop cuture, featuring giant robot battles, light-speed traveling DeLoreans, entire planets inspired by classic video arcades, and a plot that revolves around such esoterica as Cap-n Crunch commercials and John Hughes movies (http://www.ernestcline.com/blog/).

On Sunday, July 24th at Comic-Con International, fans will have a chance to meet Cline in person as he discusses Ready Player One at the ?Speculative Fiction: Space Odyssey, Alien Encounters and Other Worlds? panel (12:00-1:00 pm, Room: 25ABC) along with bestselling science fiction and fantasy writers Greg Bear (Hull Zero Three), Vernor Vinge (A Fire Upon the Deep), James S.A.Corey (Leviathan Wakes), Gini Koch (The Alien/Katherine ?Kitty? Katt series), Timothy Zahn (Star Wars: Choice of One), Kirsten Imani Kasai (Tattoo), and David S. Goyer & Michael Cassutt (Heaven?s Shadow).

Says Cline: ?To be on the panel with legendary authors like Zahn, Vinge, and Bear and the rest of this group is an amazing honor. It will be fun to try and explain to everyone at the panel what people mean when they say that Ready Player One is a mix of Willy Wonka, The Matrix, and Avatar all rolled into one. Comic-Con will also give me a great excuse to show off pictures of my new DeLorean.? (http://imdb.to/ai5Bg3, http://imdb.to/9tnLyb, http://www.avatarmovie.com/)

Fans can also catch Ernie wielding a joystick at a Joust arcade game at the Random House booth (#1515) as he does combat against other con attendees to defeat groups of enemy knights riding buzzards. The Joust tournament is open to all con attendees, who will have a chance at winning different prizes (http://bit.ly/fCHSKF).

Author Gets Publicity for Her Young Adult Novel from Savvy Teen Bloggers

Sonoma County, CA (PRWEB) June 28, 2011

Young adult book bloggers gave a mid-list novelist what big publishers don?t include in their budgets any more for all but their blockbuster authors: advertising and an author tour. The {Teen} Book Scene, a consortium of over 200 bloggers with thousands of followers between them, took Barbara Quick on a four-week author tour through Cyberspace this month, introducing her debut historical novel for teens, A Golden Web, to far more readers than the writer would ever have encountered on even the best-planned book tour in the real world. http://www.barbaraquick.com/agoldenweb.html

Discover Award-winning novelist Barbara Quick, whose 2007 title from HarperCollins (Vivaldi?s Virgins) had been translated into 15 languages, bumped up against the limits of marketing and publicity for mid-list writers when HarperTeen published her first young adult (YA) novel, A Golden Web, in April 2010. Quick had all the enthusiasm and support an author could wish for from the editorial side at HarperTeen. But the new business model for publishing depends on authors themselves to pay for and orchestrate the bulk of their own marketing and publicity. Ads for books and author tours?once de rigueur for all new titles at major houses?are deemed to be a losing investment for publishers today.

With its attractive book jacket and appealing subject matter based on the story of Alessandra Giliani, a 14th century Italian girl who defied society and her family by running off (dressed as a boy) to study anatomy at the University of Bologna medical school, A Golden Web attracted attention and some rave reviews from a passel of young adult book bloggers. But in a season of teen blockbusters that all had to do with vampires, A Golden Web didn?t catch that particular wind that propels books to best-sellerdom. http://barbaraquick.com/alessandra.html

?Someone named Kari sent me a letter on my website email back in October,? said Quick, ?asking whether I might be interested in going on a Blog Tour orchestrated by Teen Book Scene. Of course I said Yes!?

What the bloggers wanted?and got?was a series of command performances by the author. Quick gave honest and thoughtful answers to the bloggers who chose to do author interviews (three of which required her to produce her answers as videos). She fulfilled 16 individual assignments, from talking about her ?10 Favorite Disguises? to crafting a 250-word biography. She shared personal photos and impersonated the protagonist from her novel for a character interview.

It was a win-win situation, led?as so many trends are?by the tech-savvy young.

?While my virtual self was touring the Blogosphere,? says Quick, who is about to be married in August, ?my real self was tagging along with my fianc?? (violist Wayne Roden) ?on tour in Europe with the San Francisco Symphony. Talk about multi-tasking!?

About Barbara Quick

"When Barbara Quick's book proposal showed up in my mail, I was smitten upon reading it. Her prose dances off the page. Her characters befriend you like living, breathing people. The worlds she creates are so real that you feel as if you've actually spent time in these faraway places. Unlike so many other books in this genre, Barbara's 'historical novels' give all the pleasures of fine literary fiction." ?Felicia Eth Literary Representation

In addition to Vivaldi?s Virgins and A Golden Web, Barbara Quick also wrote Northern Edge, which won the Discover: Great New Writers prize in 1990. Her research for her novels has taken her from the frozen tundra of arctic Alaska to the musical cloisters of 18th century Venice. For A Golden Web, Quick spent three weeks in and around Bologna following the 700-year-old trail of her protagonist, Alessandra Giliani, who is reputed to have died at the age of 19 after making a major anatomical discovery about the coronary-pulmonary circulatory system. The author?s abilities as a linguist (she speaks and reads five languages) have aided her research and eased her travels.

Ms. Quick is a trained dancer who has paraded and performed with several samba schools in Northern California. She assists her fianc? in tending his vineyard and making wine?and has some of her best writing ideas while working in the vegetable and flower gardens she?s been cultivating on their property in Sonoma County since her move from Berkeley?her home for over 30 years?to the Wine Country.
