Tips for Winning the Battle Against Poison Ivy From Topical BioMedics, Inc.

Rhinebeck, NY (PRWEB) June 24, 2011

Summer is in full swing now, and families are spending more time outdoors?which means an increased exposure to poison ivy reports Topical BioMedics, Inc.????

Poison ivy tops the list of plants to avoid because it contains urushiol, an oily resin that binds to the skin on contact and may result in a hypersensitivity reaction characterized by itching, burning skin eruptions. This rash-causing poison ivy sap is a clear liquid found in the plant?s leaves and the roots. It is extremely potent, and only one nanogram (billionth of a gram) is needed to cause a rash.

After urushiol oil has touched the skin it takes about 12 to 36 hours for redness and swelling to appear, followed by blisters and itching. Contrary to popular belief, scratching or oozing blister fluid cannot spread the outbreak or transfer it to other people.????

Urushiol oil remains active for several years, so even handling dead leaves or vines can cause a reaction. In addition, oil transferred from the plant to other objects?such as gardening tools, an article of clothing, or even a pet?can cause the rash when it comes in contact with human skin. If poison ivy is eaten, the mucus lining of the mouth and digestive tract can be damaged. And if poison ivy is burned and the smoke inhaled, a rash may appear in the lining of the lungs, causing extreme pain and respiratory difficulty that may become life-threatening.

Poison Ivy Survival Guide

Families can have a more enjoyable summer by following these tips from Topical BioMedics, Inc., the leader in regulated topical natural biomedicines for pain relief. ?We?re hitting prime poison ivy season now, which will continue into the fall, says Lou Paradise, the company?s president and chief of research. ?Now is the time to take steps to prevent or minimize outbreaks with safe, natural products.?

Prevention:

Avoid contact with the plant. If you have a lot of it growing in your yard, consult with a professional landscaper for removal. (Unless you are a professional, do not ?weed whack? as it sprays the poison ivy?and hence the oil?right at you.)

Prior to any outdoor activity, apply odorless, greaseless Topricin Pain Relief and Healing cream to any exposed areas of your body, including face, neck, hands, arms, etc. This will form a protective barrier, making it more difficult for the urushiol oil to bond with your skin. Topricin contains natural medicines that also neutralize the adverse affect of urushiol oil. As an added plus, Topricin is the gardener?s favorite for relieving all those aches and pains of doing yard work.

Urushiol oil is extremely stable and will stay potent for years--which means you can get a rash from clothing or tools that got oil on them many seasons ago. After exposure to poison ivy, put on gloves and wipe everything you had with you and on you with rubbing alcohol and water, including shoes, tools, and clothing. Then wash clothes at least twice before wearing (if possible using bleach), hose off garden tools well, and apply leather moisturizer on footwear to prevent them from drying out (again, put on gloves).

Pets seem to be immune from getting poison ivy, but people can get a rash from the residual urushiol oil on their fur. If your dog or cat has wandered into poison ivy, bath it wearing thick rubber gloves (not latex). Consult with your veterinarian if you have any questions.

Treatment:

Urushiol binds to skin proteins and begins to penetrate within 15 minutes of contact. If treated beforehand, a reaction may be prevented. Here?s how:

First, wash exposed site with cold water (hot water will open your pores, allowing the oil in).

Follow this by bathing it in milk, which helps to get between oil and skin.

Dry off well and then apply Topricin, which will help neutralize the effect of any remaining urushiol oil left on your skin.

Wherever poison ivy grows, there is usually a plant known as jewelweed growing close by?especially in moister, shadier areas. Herbalists and Native Americans have used jewelweed for centuries as a natural remedy for treating and speeding the healing of poison ivy. When you are in the field and may have been exposed to poison ivy, pick jewelweed, slice the stem, and rub its juice on your skin to ease irritation and help prevent a breakout.

Some companies and herbalists offer poison ivy treatment soaps that contain jewelweed and other soothing natural ingredients, such as pine tar. Soaps are available from Poison Ivy Soap Company, Burt?s Bees, or search online for sources.

Take homeopathic Rhus Tox 30X tablets to help build immunity to poison ivy.

For severe outbreaks, or if you have any concerns whatsoever, see your doctor right away. It?s important to note that anyone who has typical poison ivy symptoms accompanied by a fever higher than 100 F, breathing problems, blisters that ooze yellow fluid, or a rash that affects the eyes and/or mouth should seek medical attention.

Prevent the Perils of Wearing High Heels With Tips From Topical BioMedics

Rhinebeck, NY (PRWEB) September 07, 2011

High heels look great, and are here to stay. A 5-inch pair of stilettos can lengthen the legs, thrust the hips forward creating a sexier silhouette and turn any woman into a statuesque beauty worthy of the runway? But at what cost?

According to Lou Paradise, president and chief of research of Topical BioMedics, Inc., Rhinebeck, NY, ?Wearing high heels can lead to Plantar fasciitis, Achilles tendonitis, sprained and swollen ankles, forefoot pain, blisters, aching feet, hammertoes, corns and calluses, lower back pain, knee strain, as well as other painful conditions.?

Podiatrists say more than half of Americans regularly experience aching feet, and that that 80% of those who go for treatment are women. Compounding pain issues is the fact that women not only wear high heels, they walk, on average, three miles farther than men each day.

Wearing high heels may not be the best choice for health, but women will not give up their heels any time soon.

By taking proper precautions and giving their tired, aching feet some extra TLC, this is one choice fashion-forward women won?t have to make.

KEEPING FEET HAPPY AND HEALTHY

What can women do to reduce the physical dangers of wearing high heels? Here are some helpful tips from Topical BioMedics:

-Always choose comfortable high-heeled shoes that fit well, Studies show that 88% of American women wear shoes that are too small. As we age, feet expand, so it?s helpful to have them measured periodically.

-Choose to try on shoes at the end of your day, as they swell throughout the day when you stand and walk around.

-Try on both pairs of shoes, as your feet may not be identical in size and the shoes may not be identical in size as well.

-Choose high heeled shoes with an ?air bag? or very comfortable sole that protects your feet from rubbing and provides shock absorption. If the shoes you love do not have a padded sole, get a cushy insert.

-Spend less time perched on high heels. Limit your walking and standing when wearing high heels, and whenever possible give your feet a break during the day by switching to sneakers or flats, at least for a while.

-Stretch tight shoes with shoe stretchers to make them more comfortable.

-Elevate your legs for 15 or 20 minutes to reduce swelling. This is especially important if you tend to cross your legs, which hinders circulation and causes blood to ?pool? in your feet.

-Massage your legs and feet after wearing high heels. Running your feet over a reflexology roller or golf ball is an effective way to massage the soles.????When massaging, use Topricin Foot Therapy Cream to help sooth pain and heal the damage that is causing the pain.

How does Topricin Foot Therapy work?

Topricin Foot Therapy Cream from Topical BioMedics targets ankles ankle and foot pain and contains eleven natural biomedicines medicines that naturally support and assist the body by helping the subcutaneous skin layers of the feet to drain toxins and excess fluids from the tissues which increases blood flow and helps heal the damage that is causing the pain.

?Applying Topricin Foot Therapy Cream to feet before strutting out in heels helps to reduce pain and injury," says Paradise. ?Then apply it afterwards to help relieve any burning, throbbing nerve pain in the feet. As an added plus, Topricin Foot Therapy Cream treats dry, cracked skin of the feet.?

Patented for treating neuropathy, Topricin is safe and natural and doesn?t use any volatile oils such as camphor, menthol, petroleum or lanolin, fragrances or irritating chemicals. The cream is fast absorbing, odorless, greaseless and will not stain your clothing. Formulated for maximum absorption, it can be applied as many times as needed to relieve foot pain with no fear of overuse or interference with other medications. How to Keep Kids out of the Emergency Room This Fall Safety Tips from Topical BioMedics

Rhinebeck, NY (PRWEB) September 16, 2011

Kids are back in school, with a busy schedule that includes extra-curricular sports, playground fun, and other activities. With kids spending lots of time outdoors, participating in leagues, and toting around heavy backpacks all day, strains, sprains, muscle pulls, and other mishaps are sure to follow. In fact, emergency rooms in the U.S. treat more than 9 million children each year for accidental injuries.

While injuries are a part of growing up, parents aren?t always sure which treatment options are safe and effective for their children, especially given the side effects of many oral pain relievers and the allergic reactions many kids have to smelly, greasy topical ointments.

The potential of overdosing a child using oral pain medication can cause dire consequences?including irreparable damage to the kidneys and liver. The massive number of ongoing recalls of pediatric over-the-counter (OTC) medicines this year is further cause for alarm?especially those containing the active ingredients acetaminophen and ibuprofen. Topical OTC analgesic ointments are also cause for concern, containing volatile oils such as camphor, menthol, and other irritating and potentially hazardous chemicals.

Lou Paradise, president and chief of research of Topical BioMedics, urges parents to consider the following safety tips to help protect their children from pain and injury and keep them out of the emergency room.

--Children should have a physical exam before participating in sports and always wear the proper protective equipment. Be sure your child stretches and warms up muscles prior to activity to help prevent injuries.

--Make sure backpacks fit properly and have padded backs and straps. Children should wear BOTH straps and only carry what is necessary to avoid any excess weight. A backpack should weigh no more than 5% - 10% of the child?s body weight, and never hang more than 4? below the waistline.

--Clothing and shoes should fit properly. Loose clothes can catch in playground equipment, and properly fitted footwear minimizes the risk of falling or tripping.

--Small children should be supervised at the playground or while playing outside at home.

--Bullying is becoming epidemic. An adult should accompany younger children to the bus stop to avoid episodes of roughhousing.

Even with precautions, kids have accidents, and there are times when pain and injuries are unavoidable. Moreover, 25-40% of children aged 3-5 and 8-12 experience growing pains.

?Parents need to be armed with a safe, effective, and natural pain product made just for children, which is why I developed Topricin Junior Pain Relief and Healing Cream,? says Paradise. ?Formulated with 13 natural biomedicines, Topricin Junior supports and assists the body in the healing process to help reduce inflammation, detoxify and stimulate blood flow that increases oxygenation of the skin to speed healing and relieve aches and pains. I?ve used Topricin on my own children, and they now use it on my grandchildren.?

Topricin Junior has no side effects, no odor, no parabens, no petroleum, and no harsh chemicals. Some of its key actives include arnica for injuries and bruising to the muscles and joints, echinacea to help reduce inflammation and graphite for most skin conditions. ?In fact, Topricin Junior has been effective in treating eczema and other skin issues,? says Paradise.

Winner of the Parent Tested/Parent Approved (PTPA?) Seal of Approval, and designated a Trusted Partner with Healthy Child Healthy World in its continued effort to empower parents in creating healthier, safer environments for children, Topricin Junior is a safe, natural alternative to over-the-counter chemical-based pain pills which can have dangerous side effects.
